2 dead, 10 wounded in Chicago shootings Wednesday

Two men were killed and 10 other people were wounded in shootings Wednesday across Chicago.

The most recent fatal shooting happened Wednesday afternoon in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

A 23-year-old man was driving at 2:53 p.m. in the 3200 block of West 64th Street when someone on the street opened fire, according to Chicago Police. He was shot in the head and crashed his vehicle into a stop sign at 64th Place and Kedzie, and the vehicle flipped over. He was taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. His name was not released Thursday morning.

About 12 hours earlier, a man was fatally shot in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.

The 24-year-old was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head at 2:34 a.m. in the 8000 block of South Marshfield, police said. The man, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office rule both deaths as homicides.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened late Wednesday in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Two men, ages 23 and 24, were entering a vehicle at 11:28 p.m. in the 3400 block of West Diversey when four males approached and fired at them, according to police. The younger man was shot in the right arm while the older man was shot in the left leg. They were both taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where their conditions were stabilized. A police source said both men are documented gang members.

Nearly 30 minutes earlier, a man and woman were shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side. The 28-year-old man and 41-year-old woman were standing on the sidewalk about 11 p.m. in the 5100 block of South Hermitage when three males on bicycles rode by and fired shots, police said. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, while the woman suffered a gunshot wound to the left shoulder and was taken to Stroger Hospital. Both of their conditions were stabilized.

At 9:49 p.m., a man was wounded in a shooting in the Far South Side Morgan Park neighborhood. The 18-year-old was walking on the sidewalk in the 11100 block of South Aberdeen when two males walked up and fired at him, police said. He was shot in the right ankle and left heel and taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

Less than an hour earlier, a man was shot in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The 21-year-old was walking in the 6300 block of South Artesian at 9:06 p.m. when he heard shots and realized he’d been hit, police said. He was shot in the arm and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

Earlier Wednesday evening, a 20-year-old man was shot in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side. He was outside about 7:45 p.m. in the 7200 block of South Dobson when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire, according to police. The man was shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Jackson Park Hospital.

Nearly an hour before that, a man was shot in the Gresham neighborhood. The 22-year-old was walking on the sidewalk at 6:55 p.m. in the 8400 block of South Throop when three people walked up and fired at him, police said. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park in good condition.

A man was shot multiple times Wednesday afternoon in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side. The 20-year-old was shot in the arm, abdomen and chest at 5:15 p.m. in the 10100 block of South Michigan, according to police. He was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in serious condition.

Wednesday’s first shooting happened in the Morgan Park neighborhood. A 25-year-old man was getting out of a vehicle about 1:35 a.m. in the 11400 block of South Ada when someone opened fire, according to police. The man suffered two gunshot wounds to the leg and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in good condition.
