A 20-year–old man was fatally struck by a freight train Thursday morning in southwest suburban Bridgeview.

Christian David Land was walking on the tracks near 91st Street and 76th Avenue about 8:30 a.m. when he was struck by a train, according to Bridgeview village spokesman Ray Hanania and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The conductor told police he spotted the man walking north with his back to the oncoming train, Hanania said. The conductor braked and blew the train horn, but the man did not respond and was struck.

Land, of the 7000 block of O’Connell Drive in Chicago Ridge, was pronounced dead at 9 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Friday found he died of multiple injuries from being struck by the train, and his death was ruled a suicide.
