A 48-year-old man died when his car went off Interstate 65 late Friday and slammed into a light pole near Crown Point, Indiana.

Just after 10 p.m., John Gondell tried to take the southbound exit to U.S. Route 231 when his Toyota Camry went straight through a curve, overa grassy area and into the large pole, according to Indiana State Police and the Lake County coroner’s office.

The Gary resident was dead at the scene. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
