Cubs decline 2017 option on Hammel’s contract

The Cubs parted ways with starting right-hander Jason Hammel on Sunday, turning down his $10 million option for 2017.

Cubs president Theo Epstein said the organization always will consider Hammel a Cub, but he wants to give a chance to a younger pitcher under more years of control.
