A 17-year-old boy was taken to a hospital by helicopter after the car he was driving went off the road and slammed into a sign, utility pole and tree before landing on its roof Monday near north suburban Round Lake.

A deputy spotted the 1994 Buick Regal just before 2 p.m. off Wilson Road south of Route 120, according to Lake County sheriff’s office spokesman Det. Chris Covelli.

The teenage driver was airlifted to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators think the car had been northbound on Wilson, but it wasn’t clear what time the crash happened, Covelli said.

The sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigations Unit is handling the case.
