A 57-year-old northwest Indiana man died early Sunday, about a week after he was struck by a vehicle in East Chicago.

About 11 p.m. Jan. 25, Florentino Reyes was walking across U.S. Route 12 near Deodar Street when he was was hit by a car, according to East Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Reyes was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died at 12:40 a.m. Sunday, authorities said. He lived in the 3900 block of Elm Street in East Chicago.

The collision was captured by surveillance cameras nearby and showed the 83-year-old Chicago man at the wheel swerving his vehicle to avoid Reyes, according to police, who cited darkness and rainy, foggy conditions as causes. No citations or charges are expected to be filed.
