A 24-year-old northwest suburban man died after a crash early Saturday in South Barrington, police said.

Someone spotted a Subaru Legacy shortly before 7 a.m. on the side of Illinois Route 59 about a half-mile north of Higgins Road, South Barrington Police Sgt. Sam Parma said.

Officers found Island Lake resident Dieter Moreno dead behind the wheel of the car, Parma said.

He had been heading north on Route 59 when the car veered across the southbound lanes and hit two trees before coming to a rest in a ditch west of the road, according to police, who said it could have happened as long as three hours before emergency crews were notified.

Moreno was wearing a seatbelt, and neither drugs nor alcohol were thought to be factors in the crash, police said. The cause is under investigation, with an autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
