Driver airlifted to hospital after crashing into horse near Marengo

A woman was airlifted to a hospital after she crashed her SUV into a horse that was running loose Wednesday night in an unincorporated area near northwest suburban Marengo.

The 52-year-old was driving a 2002 Honda CR-V eastbound in the 8000 block of Route 20 in Coral Township when her SUV struck one of two horses that had gotten loose from a nearby farm, according to the McHenry County sheriff’s office.

The woman was flown by Flight for Life to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford, where her condition was stabilized, according to a statement from police. She was wearing her seatbelt and her airbag deployed in the crash.

The horse was injured in the crash and the owner had it euthanized at the scene, according to the statement.

The sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigations Unit is investigating the crash.
