A 17-year-old girl died Friday afternoon after she and a 23-year-old woman were shot two days earlier in south suburban Harvey.

The shooting happened about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in an apartment complex near 146th and Halsted in Harvey, according to city spokesman Sean Howard.

Someone knocked at the door of an apartment in the complex and asked about drugs, Howard said. A few minutes later, eight bullets were fired into the apartment.

Jaymere McMurtry, 17, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Howard and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Authorities initially reported that the girl was 16.

McMurtry, of the 300 block of East Calumet in Harvey, was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Friday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The woman was shot in the lower leg and taken to a hospital, where her condition was stabilized after she underwent surgery Thursday morning, Howard said. She also did not live in the apartment where the shooting happened.

“It’s a dangerous complex,” Howard said.

A person of interest is in custody, Howard said. No charges have been filed as of Friday night.
