A northwest suburban man was sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexually assaulting someone he knew outside a gas station two years ago in South Elgin.

Kane County Circuit Judge James C. Hallock sentenced 45-year-old Juan C. Calderon to 16 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on Thursday night for the Feb. 15, 2014, assault, according to a statement from the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.

Calderon was driving the victim’s pickup truck when they pulled into the gas station in the 0-100 block of Route 25 in South Elgin and got into a heated fight, prosecutors said.

He then punched, bit and sexually assaulted the person twice, according to prosecutors, who did not release the victim’s age or gender.

A jury found him guilty of two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony, and domestic battery, a Class 4 felony, on Dec. 15, 2015, the state’s attorney’s office said. He is required to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence and must also register for life as a sex offender.
