Homeless Elgin man gets 8 years for failing to register as sex offender

A homeless northwest suburban man was sentenced to eight years in prison Thursday for failing to register as a sex offender.

In December, a judge convicted 45-year-old Steven M. Dunner of failure to register as a sexual offender, according to a statement from the Kane County state’s attorney’s office. Dunner had waived his right to a jury trial.

When Dunner registered between November 2014 and April 2015, he gave Elgin police false addresses, prosecutors said. He was convicted in 2009 of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, which put him into the registry; and was also been convicted of 11 other felonies between 1992 and 2009, including drug delivery and theft.

He was subject to a longer sentence because of his criminal history, prosecutors said. Dunner receives credit for at least 296 days served in the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest.
