A man died Tuesday afternoon following a house fire in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
Fire crews responded at 12:22 p.m. to the blaze on the first floor of a two-story home in the 3200 block of West 61st Street, Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Frank Velez said. The fire was put out 25 minutes later.
Refugio Pueble, thought to be in his 50s, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:19 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Pueble lived on the block where the fire broke out.
An autopsy Wednesday did not rule on his cause or manner of death, with final results pending further investigation.
The home didn’t have any smoke detectors and sustained significant damage in the fire, which likely was caused by “careless use of smoking materials,” fire officials said.
