Chicago Police released a surveillance photo of the suspected SUV in a fatal hit-and-run crash early Sunday in the Avondale neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Christopher Sanchez, 34, was struck by a vehicle about 5:20 a.m. at North Milwaukee and West Belmont avenues, according to Chicago Fire Department officials and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Police described the vehicle as a silver full-sized SUV, possibly a Jeep Cherokee. The driver fled northbound on Milwaukee after the crash.

Sanchez was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:06 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 3100 block of North Sawyer.

Fire Media Affairs Chief Juan Hernandez said he “may have flown about 30 feet from where he got hit.”

Victoria Torres, Sanchez’ niece, said he lived nearby and was walking home after a night out when he was struck. She said he worked as a mechanic and was not married.

Sanchez’s family held a vigil at the intersection where he was fatally struck at 6:15 p.m. Monday.

Anyone with information about the crash or the vehicle is asked to call the Major Accident Investigation Unit at (312) 745-4521.
