Dan Sinker turns 40 next week.

As a birthday present, I asked City Hall for an autographed picture of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who I figured might sign it with a characteristically acerbic message.

Who is Dan Sinker?

Sinker is the digital genius who became the alter ego of Rahm Emanuel. Back in 2011 when Emanuel was first running for mayor, Sinker anonymously created the crazy-funny-brilliant Twitter feed @MayorEmanuel. It took the investigative work of a number of reporters and ultimately the Atlantic Monthly to figure out who was actually writing it.

How effective was it?

Are you kidding me?

David Axelrod and all of Rahm’s peeps read Sinker’s fake Twitter feeds more than the obligatory press releases produced for the candidate’s political operation. The @MayorEmanuel Twitter stream roared like a wildfire.

It was — to quote Sinker (but with care) — ”f——g amazing!”
