A southwest suburban man fatally shot his wife, then called 911 before fatally shooting himself late Monday night in Frankfort Township, authorities said.

About 11:30 p.m., a man called 911 and said he had just killed his wife, then hung up the phone, according to the Will County sheriff’s office.

When deputies arrived at the home in the 19000 block of Beechnut Drive in unincorporated Frankfort Township, the front door was slightly ajar, according to the sheriff’s office.

They found 76-year-old William G. Swearingen and 72-year-old Diane C. Swearingen unresponsive in the living room. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident appears to be a murder-suicide, according to the sheriff’s office. A handgun was found at the scene.

According to the sheriff’s office, both had been suffering from serious health issues.

Causes and manners of death are pending toxicological and police reports, according to the Will County coroner’s office.

Sheriff’s detectives remained at the scene Tuesday morning.
