A man was in critical condition after he was shot on the Near West Side late Thursday.

Just before midnight, the 48-year-old was in the 2200 block of West Adams when another male tried to rob him, police said. The attempted robber shot him in the torso several times before running off.

The man took himself to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.
