Two people were shot and wounded Saturday afternoon as they were driving in Austin, according to the police, who said someone pulled alongside in sport-utility vehicle and opened fire.

The police said the victims were a 32-year-old man, who was in serious condition at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park with gunshot wounds to his left arm and left leg, and a 23-year-old woman, hospitalized in fair condition with a gunshot wound to her left leg.

It happened just before 3:30 p.m., according to the police, who said the two were traveling in a vehicle in the 900 block of North Central Avenue when they were shot.
