The Bears re-signed Deonte Thompson, their speedy kick return weapon last year, to a one-year deal Thursday.

Thompson caught two passes for 81 yards last season, but proved to be a dangerous kick returner after signing with the team last season. In seven games, he took 14 kicks for 409 yards, an average of 29.2 yards.

He was second in the league in average among those with at least 10 tries.

He was on the Bears’ practice squad for seven weeks before being promoted Nov. 10. Thompson figures to be the favorite to return kicks again; receiver Marc Mariani, who was re-signed earlier this month, could return punts.
