67-year-old held in Cook County Jail dies of ‘terminal illness’

A 67-year-old man being held at the Cook County Jail on sexual assault charges died early Sunday of a “terminal illness,” authorities said.

Zdzislaw Jakubczak was transferred from the jail’s Cermak Hospital to Stroger Hospital on Tuesday, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office. When inmates are taken to outside facilities, they are monitored 24 hours a day by two sheriff’s officers.

Jakubczak, who lived in the 7900 block of 82nd Street in Bridgeview, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1:58 a.m. Saturday, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

He was booked into the jail on Feb. 17 on predatory criminal sexual assault charges, the sheriff’s office said. He had been housed at Cermak Hospital since his arrest.

Jakubczak’s death was related to terminal illness, the sheriff’s office said. An autopsy Sunday did not rule on his cause and manner of death pending medical records.
