Resident, firefighter hurt in Island Lake fire that killed 3 pets

Wauconda Fire Department

A homeowner and a firefighter were injured early Friday in a house fire that killed two cats and a dog in northwest suburban Island Lake.

Firefighters were called at 2:02 a.m. to a structure fire in a two-story townhome in the 3600 block of Linden Drive in Island Lake, according to a statement from the Wauconda Fire District. Crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the attached garage.

It took firefighters about 90 minutes to extinguish the fire, the fire district said. The homeowner, who was the only occupant at the time, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening burns. A firefighter was also taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening medical condition.

Two cats and a dog died in the fire, officials said. The blaze was contained to the single townhome and did not spread to adjacent units. The damage is estimated at $200,000.

The fire remains under investigation, and no cause had been determined as of Friday morning, officials said.
