Bond denied for 18-year-old charged in Des Plaines shooting

Bond was denied Monday for an 18-year-old man charged with shooting and critically wounding someone who broke into his home Saturday morning in northwest suburban Des Plaines.

Miguel Esquivel, 18, faces a felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.

Authorities responded to a home invasion about 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the 400 block of West Touhy Avenue in Des Plaines and found a man unresponsive on the ground, sheriff’s police said.

A 27-year-old man had forced his way into Esquivel’s locked home, demanding that Esquivel pay money he owed, police said.

Esquivel retrieved a gun from inside the home and shot the 27-year-old man multiple times before hiding the loaded weapon under a neighbor’s porch, police said.

The older man was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he remained in critical condition Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

Esquivel, who was out on bond on an aggravated battery charge, appeared in bond court Monday in Rollings Meadows, where a judge ordered him held without bond. He is due in court again Wednesday.
