A man was killed and a woman injured in a shooting early Sunday in southwest suburban Joliet.

Officers responded to a call of a person shot at 1:20 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of Englewood Avenue in Joliet, and found two people inside a vehicle, both suffering from gunshot wounds, Joliet Police Chief Alan Roechner said.

Witnesses told police a male suspect dressed in dark clothing walked up to the vehicle and started shooting, then took off running.

The 22-year-old man sitting in the passenger seat, Sjontre Thompson, was shot in the chest and both legs, and was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where he was pronounced dead at 2:11 a.m., according to Roechner and the Will County coroner’s office.

A 28-year-old woman was shot in her right thigh and taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with non-life-threatening injuries, Roechner said.

No one was in custody as of Monday afternoon.
