A 77-year-old man shot his wife to death before turning the gun on himself Saturday at their home in northwest suburban Elgin, police said.

Officers called for a well-being check about 7 a.m. in the 100 block of Brookside Drive found Donald Stephens and his 75-year-old wife Lynn dead inside the home, according to Elgin police.

A preliminary investigation found the man used a handgun in an apparent murder-suicide, police said.

Autopsies were scheduled for Monday.
