Former Bears linebacker says he wouldn’t retire if Fox was his coach

View image | gettyimages.comA 12-year career in the NFL is a long one by almost any measure, but such a long tenure is even more amazing when it belongs to a hard-hitting linebacker.

For Brian Urlacher, 12 years may not have been enough time on the gridiron.

The former Bears defensive stud has had a storied career in football, but he said he would have added to that legacy if John Fox was his coach.

Urlacher appeared on the “The Waddle and Silvy Show” Wednesday where he spoke about his feelings for Fox.

From ESPN:

I would have wanted to play more because of Coach Fox, Urlacher said. I’ve always been a huge fan of Coach Fox. I’ve known him for 12 or 13 years, so my desire would have been greater [to keep playing] because of him. It’s hard when you go from Lovie to anything else, because I’m so accustomed to playing for him and doing what he does in that defense, but the desire to keep going would have been there with Coach Fox and his football knowledge and what he brings to the table.

Unfortunately for the Bears, Fox wasn’t available as he was busy coaching the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl in 2013. Instead, the team hired Marc Trestman — and then fired him after last year’s abysmal season.

Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians also said he was “surprised” he didn’t get the Bears coaching job when he interviewed for the job that Trestman would win. Arians has gone 21-11 during his tenure in the desert, Trestman was 13-19 before he was fired.
