Trains on the Metra BNSF line are running again but with long delays after a train fatally hit a bicyclist Tuesday evening near west suburban Berwyn, officials said.
About 6:45 p.m., outbound BNSF train No. 1373 hit a person trespassing on the tracks near Harlem Avenue, spokesman Tom Miller said.
Accoring to a statement from Riverside police, the person was a man riding a bicycle trying to cross the tracks even though the gates were down and lights were flashing.
Trains were halted in either direction at Harlem Avenue for more than 2 1/2 hours as officials investigated, according to Metra’s website.
BNSF trains are cleared to move through the area again as of about 9:25 p.m., but are running up to two hours late, according to Metra’s website.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the fatality Tuesday evening.
