Defensive tackle Dan Hampton plans to begin practicing next week for the first time since his off-season knee arthroscopy. . . .

It’s Mike Pagel’s turn to start for the Colts in his quarterback battle with Art Schlichter. . . .

Colt tackle Chris Hinton, from Phillips High and Northwestern, is writing a weekly column for the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel. Hinton compared departed Frank Kush with new coach Rod Dowhower in his first effort. Dowhower’s coaches “treat people with respect. They’re teachers,” Hinton wrote. “I’ve seen people work harder. There’s a big difference when you feel you’re working for a common goal to win instead of to avoid a punishment. A lot of times we felt that way with Frank.” . . .

The Federal Trade Commission has ruled there is no scientific basis for an amino acid product similar to one that has drawn favorable reviews from Bear players for increasing size and endurance.
