Ernie Banks, or Mr. Cub as he was known to many, first made his major league debut for the Cubs on Sep. 17, 1953.

There wasn’t much Banks didn’t accomplish in his illustrious career. He hit for power (514 homers), he drove in plenty of runs (1,636) and he was named NL MVP (twice, 1958-59). He also had five seasons of 40 or more home runs.

The Dallas native attended University of Chicago and signed with the Cubs as a free agent. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977.
