A man was hit and killed by a Metra train Thursday evening near unincorporated Maine Township in the northwest suburbs.

Thomas M. Young, 30, was struck about 7:35 p.m. by outbound North Central Line Train No. 119, according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Young, of the 600 block of Jon Lane in Des Plaines, was dead on the tracks near the intersection of Central and Rand roads, between the O’Hare and Prospect Heights stations, authorities said. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Train 119 was on the move as of 9:40 p.m., with customers from the day’s final outbound North Central route, Train 121, departing from Prospect Heights, Reile said.

It wasn’t immediately clear which authorities were assisting Metra police with the investigation.
