Rookie Tom Sanders, whom coach Mike Ditka has called a strong candidate for the No. 2 halfback job, is doubtful for the next two exhibition games because of a pulled hamstring.

Quarterback Jim McMahon, linemen Jay Hilgenberg and Kurt Becker and president Michael McCaskey left the afternoon practice early to attend the wake of guard Mark Bortz’ mother, Helen.

James Maness, the third-round rookie wide receiver, returned to the sideline because of the hamstring pull that has hobbled him throughout training camp.

Tight end Pat Dunsmore’s adductor muscle was well enough to practice, but he had to leave the field with an ankle sprain. . . . Trainer Fred Caito said safety Gary Fencik would return to practice today after missing nearly a week with hamstring trouble.
