The Cubs were losing to the Detroit Tigers 15-8 with one out left in the top of the ninth inning, and Cubs manager Joe Maddon didn’t want to dip into the bullpen anymore. Maddon decided to use outfielder Chris Denorfia to get Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias out.

Denorfia said he hasn’t pitched since American Legion baseball in high school, and then, he only pitched a couple innings.

This isn’t the first time Maddon used a position player to pitch during a game this season. Catcher David Ross pitched two innings this season and has yet to let up a run.
