Kid & coho: Fish of the Week

Mike Rutahad a father-son moment for a really Good Friday.

The Downers Grove man coho fished by the Adler Planetarium with sons Ethan, 8, and

Lincoln, 6, with half a night crawler on a No. 6 Eagle Claw hook 4 feet under a slip-bobber.

“I told [Ethan] we needed to look for birds diving underwater,’’” Ruta emailed.

“We found some in an area just slightly sheltered by the wind. Within five minutes, I

heard, `Got one!.’ I was stunned to see him pull a thrashing coho to shore after a

short fight.’’”

Now, the heart.

“We created a memory that I will remember forever,’’” Ruta emailed. “Hopefully,

Ethan will too. His first coho ended up on the dinner plate for Good Friday.’’”

FOTW, the celebration of big fish and good stories around Chicago fishing, appears Wednesdays on the Sun-Times outdoors page.
