SHARE Report: Cardinals finished second in David Price sweepstakes

The Cubs didn’t get David Price, but here’s something Chicago fans can be happy about: Neither did the Cardinals.

Price agreed to terms on a seven-year, $217 million deal with the Red Sox Tuesday, according to the Boston Globe.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, St. Louis was Price’s second choice.

The free-agent pitcher was rumored to be favoring the Cubs because of his connection with Chicago manager Joe Maddon, who was in Tampa Bay with Price for many seasons.

But in the end, Chicago likely didn’t have the cash to compete with Boston, who dished out the largest contract in franchise history, the Globe said.

Do Cubs have cash to meet David’s Price — or Zack Greinke’s, or Jeff Samardzija’s?Along with Chicago, the Dodgers and Giants were the other teams attempting to land Price, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.

In addition to Zack Greinke, Price was considered one of the top two pitchers on the market. He posted a 2.45 ERA last season with the Blue Jays and Tigers.
