Despite the frigid temperatures, hundreds flocked to McCormick Place Saturday for the opening of the Chicago Auto Show.

“He loves cars and I love him, so we came,” Bonita Twilliee, said, explaining why she and her husband chose to celebrate Valentine’s Day at the expo–the largest of its kind in the country.

The couple, who wore matching red sweaters, weren’t alone as dozens of couples held hands as they weaved in and out of the car displays.

The cars also got love from those looking for a new ride.

Nancy Cook, of Aurora, was hoping she’s be able to narrow down what small SUV she’ll make her second car.

“I like to go up in a car instead of going down to a sedan,” she said.

Cars popular at this year’s show include subcompacts from Mazda, the Honda HR-V, the Acura RDX, the new Jeep Renegade and the 2016 Ford Edge.

Not-so-new crossovers, including Chevrolet’s Trax and Buick’s Encore, were also favorites.

First-time buyers were impressed by the Ford Focus and Honda Fit and Civic as well as Nissan’s Juke crossover, Fiat’s lineup and the Buick Dart, officials said.

“If you don’t get approved on a Focus, you won’t get approved anywhere else,” said Michael Bukvich, a Ford representative.

The Jeep Renegade, with its test obstacle track, had many standing in line to get a taste of the rugged vehicle.

The Ford Mustang also had a following its own, with visitors wanting to have a taste of the car’s 150 mph power.

Many concept cars were also on display.

Nissan and Kia led the way with an array of Nissan performance vehicles and the Kia Trail’ster.

Mitsubishi also gave attendees plenty to talk about with its GC-PHEV concept SUV –– a North American debut complete with easy-access doors, an all-wheel drive system and a large interface touchscreen.

But it was the new year versions of the classics that got car fans excited.

Chevrolet’s Corvette, Camaro, Impala and the Colorado Duramax truck were at the top of visitors’ “dream car” lists.

“I find my way back to the Corvettes and the Camaros. I’m a sucker for big V8 [supercars] and loud engines,” said Auto Show attendee Andy Hayes.

The Chicago Auto Show runs through Feb. 22.
