A hoverboard exploded while charging inside a home in southwest suburban Orland Park Sunday evening.

The family at the home in the 17200 block of Deer Trail had been having problems getting their new hoverboard chargedwhen it blew up about 5 p.m., sending several burning pieces across the room, according to Orland Park village spokesman Ray Hanania.

Family members extinguished small fires on a window shade and couch by the time fire crews arrived.A woman was treated at the scene for a burn to her hand but no one was seriously injured, Hanania said.

The family said the explosion happened a few hours after they tried plugging it in for the second time since buying it last week.

Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said it was investigating “dozens” of fires caused by the popular self-balancing scooters. They urge owners to have a fire extinguisher nearby while charging hoverboards away from combustible materials.
