Two northwest Indiana men drowned Saturday and another was hospitalized after swimming in Lake Michigan while beaches in the Gary, Indiana, area were under a hazard warning.

Kyle Riebly, 26, of Griffith, and David Halford, 37, of Hobart, drowned at Well Street Beach, 9001 Lake Shore Dr., according to the Lake County, Indiana, coroner’s office.

The Gary Fire Department had been called there around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Both men were taken to Methodist Hospital’s Northlake Campus, where Alden was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m. and Riebly at 3:48 p.m.

Mark Jones, chief of operations for the Gary Fire Department, said the two men who drowned were among five people pulled from the water. One of the others was hospitalized, and two others declined to be taken to hospitals.

The National Weather Service had issued a beach hazard warning for northwest Indiana, warning that life-threatening waves and currents were expected and urging people to stay out of the water.
