Police: 4 killed, 39 wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago

Four men were killed and at least 39 more people were wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday evening and Monday morning.

The latest homicide happened Sunday evening in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side, according to Chicago Police.

A 33-year-old man was standing on the street about 10:15 p.m. in the 11500 block of South Perry when two males walked up and fired multiple shots, police said. The shooters then ran away.

He was shot in the back and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s officer could not immediately confirm the death or provide more information.

Late Saturday, a man was killed and a teenager was wounded in a shooting at an Englewood neighborhood park on the South Side.

Glennell Fairley, 21, was playing basketball with a 15-year-old boy about 10:45 p.m. at Ogden Park, 6500 S. Racine Ave. when someone opened fire, police and the medical examiner’s office said.

Fairley, was shot in the chest and arm and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 12:03 a.m. Sunday, authorities said. Fairley lived in the 6600 block of South Marshfield.

The teen was shot in the arm and later showed up at Holy Cross Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Late Friday, a west suburban man was killed in an Austin neighborhood shooting that left two other injured on the West Side.

About 11:40 p.m., the trio was standing on a sidewalk in the 500 block of North Lavergne when someone started shooting, police said.

Leander E. Winford II, 59, was shot in the right arm and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:38 a.m. Saturday, authorities said. He lived in the 2200 block of South 14th Avenue in Broadview.

A 17-year-old boy was shot in the left leg and a 32-year-old man in the left arm and leg. They were also taken to Stroger, where their conditions were stabilized, police said.

The weekend’s first fatal shooting happened about two hours earlier in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.

Kendall Smith, 22, was standing on a sidewalk in the 11200 block of South Michigan when he heard gunshots about 9:30 p.m. and realized he’d been shot in the torso, authorities said.

He was taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:58 p.m., authorities said. He lived nearby in the 11200 block of South Indiana.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened Sunday night in the Riverdale neighborhood on the Far South Side.

A 19-year-old was sitting outside about 10:40 p.m. in the 31200 block of South Corliss when someone walked up and shot him once in both legs, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

Less than an hour earlier, a man was wounded in a South Shore neighborhood shooting. Officers responding about 10:15 p.m. to a call of shots fired in the 2400 block of East 78th Street found the 24-year-old man in a building vestibule with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, police said. Witnesses told investigators a white Chevrolet Cavalier drove by and someone inside opened fire. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

About 9:45 p.m., two men were shot in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side. The men, ages 21 and 32, were in a Toyota Camry stopped at a red light in the 5500 block of South Indiana when an armed male wearing white clothing walked up and opened fire, police said. The 21-year-old was shot in the left arm and chest and taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. The older man was shot in the back and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Both of their conditions were stabilized.

At least 32 other people were wounded in shootings across the city between 4 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Sunday.

Additionally, a person was shot in the leg by a Chicago Police officer early Sunday in the Calumet Heights neighborhood on the South Side.
