Five people were charged after a woman was critically injured in a crash involving a stolen car Wednesday night on the South Side.

About 9:30 p.m., officers saw a Kia in traffic that had been reported stolen, according to Chicago Police.

The officers began following the stolen car and activated their emergency lights and sirens, police said. The Kia sped away and the officers pursued the car for a short period of time before terminating the chase.

About three blocks after police terminated the chase, the Kia crashed into a Toyota in the 6800 block of South South Chicago Avenue, police said.

The driver of the Toyota, a woman in her 20s, was critically injured in the crash and was taken to Stroger Hospital, police said.

Five males inside the stolen Kia were taken into custody and each charged with one misdemeanor count of criminal trespass to a vehicle, police said.

Area South detectives and the Major Accidents Investigation Unit are investigating.
