A tornado warning is in effect Sunday night for downstate Iroquois, Ford and Kankakee counties.

A severe thunderstorm that could lead to a tornado was spotted southeast of Dwight just after 9:30 p.m. prompting the warning, which is in effect until 10:15 p.m. for mainly rural areas in those counties, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents in those counties should stay inside and take shelter in a basement or in an interior room on the lowest level of a building.
