A motorcyclist died after crashing in a parking lot Monday night in northwest Indiana.

A blue 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle was in the parking lot for Planet Fitness and Aldi in the 7900 block of Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond when the driver lost control, crashed into a curb, slid onto the sidewalk, and crashed into the wall of the grocery about 9 p.m., according to Hammond police.

George Bigley Surles, 31, was taken to Community Hospital in Munster, where he was pronounced dead at 9:59 p.m., according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office. He lived in the 7600 block of Marshall Avenue in Hammond.

Police said he did not appear to be wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
