Man charged after being shot by CPD during West Side raid

Bond was set at $500,000 Tuesday for a DeKalb man who is facing charges after being shot by a Chicago Police officer during an investigation into a suspected “gun house” Saturday evening in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

Jessie White, 29, faces one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without a FOID card and one count of aggravated assault of a peace officer, both felonies, according to Chicago Police.

About 9 p.m. Saturday, Gang Investigations Officers responded to the first block of North Kilpatrick after police received a tip that an auto repair and car wash business was storing weapons, police said.

When the officers entered the business, they saw a man who matched officers’ suspect description, police said. When he saw the officers, the man ran away and, as he did, he pointed a handgun at an officer.

One of the officers then opened fired, striking the man in the leg and arm, police said. No officers were injured in the shooting.

The man, later identified as White, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said at the time.

White, who lives in the 700 block South Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb, was ordered held on a $500,000 bond at a Tuesday hearing, according to Cook County Circuit Court records. He is due in court again Friday.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the organized-crime officers were targeting the suspected “gun house” and five weapons, including a TEC-9 assault weapon, were recovered at the scene.

A spokeswoman for the Independent Police Review Authority said the agency was investigating the shooting. The officer who shot the man will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
