Second person charged in city/suburban crime spree

A man who barricaded himself in a Far South Side apartment faces several charges in connection with a crime spree that began in Chicago and ended with the death of a gas station clerk in southwest suburban Summit two weeks ago.

Manuel Gama, 19, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, two counts of armed robbery and one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, according to Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Gama was arrested Wednesday after he was tracked to an apartment near 103rd and Avenue G where he had barricaded himself, Guglielmi said. SWAT was called to the scene, and Gama surrendered himself peacefully.

The 15-year-old is charged with shooting a 27-year-old man in the leg during a carjacking in the 8900 block of South South Chicago Avenue at 7:24 a.m. July 6, according to Chicago Police. The victim was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a broken femur.

About five minutes later, another 27-year-old man was shot four times in the chest in the 8400 block of South Mackinaw, police said. He was listed in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

About half an hour after the second shooting, the stolen vehicle was believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run crash with another vehicle in the 5700 block of South Lake Shore Drive, police said.

The Pontiac Grand Prix taken in the carjacking was later used in two armed robberies and the fatal shooting in Summit, according to police.

Police responded to a call of an armed robbery about 8:30 a.m. at a Shell station in the 5300 block of South Harlem, according to Summit police. While police were at the scene, another robbery was reported at another Shell station at the intersection of 63rd and Harlem.

Gama is charged with fatally shooting a store employee in the second robbery just before 9 a.m., authorities said. He was identified as Ghassan K. Abuujeries, 34, of Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died, authorities said.

Gama is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday, Guglielmi said.
