Man charged with fatal shooting at Austin party

A man charged with killing one man and wounding another at an Austin neighborhood house party late Sunday on the West Side was ordered held on a $1 million bond.

Eric Black, 33, faces counts of murder, attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon for the 11:50 p.m. shooting in the 5000 block of West Jackson, according to Chicago Police.

Black walked up to two men, ages 18 and 33, and shot each of them multiple times, police allege.

The younger man, Aetiris Gladney, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:23 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived on the same block as the shooting.

The older man was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to the chest and right leg. He wasn’t cooperative with investigators, police said.

A woman at the crime scene who identified herself as the aunt of both victims said Gladney worked for a steel mill. “He’s a church-going person and a hard-working young man,” said the woman, who declined to give her name.

Black, of the 5300 block of South Michigan, was arrested nearby shortly after the attack, and a gun was recovered, police said Tuesday. He faces an additional felony charge as an armed habitual criminal due to a previous weapon conviction, police said.

He was ordered held on a $1 million bond in court Wednesday, and is next scheduled to appear in court Aug. 8, according to Cook County sheriff’s records.
