A 20-year-old man was shot to death early Sunday while driving in the West Elsdon neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

About 2:10 a.m., Jesus Martinez Jr. was at the wheel of a vehicle going west on 55th Street when a black car pulled alongside him at a stop sign at Kostner Avenue, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Someone inside the other car pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking him in the back, police said.

Martinez was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 7:23 a.m., authorities said. He lived in the 5700 block of South Kilbourn.

No one was in custody for the shooting Sunday night as Area Central detectives investigate.
