Everett B. Palmer | Gary police

A man has been charged with stealing mail and trying to break into a home earlier this month in northwest Indiana.

Everett B. Palmer, 42, stole packages and mail from a home June 16 in the 6500 block of Birch Avenue in Gary, according to a statement from Gary police. Then, on June 20, Palmer returned to the same home and tried to break in by removing the glass from the security door and forcing the entry door open.

Officers responding to the homeowner’s call for a burglary spotted Palmer near South Grand Boulevard and East 3rd Avenue and he was subsequently taken into custody, police said. The homeowner identified him as the person seen at the residence.

Palmer, of Gary, has been charged with theft for the June 16 incident, and attempted burglary and attempted residential entry for the June 20 incident, police said.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Gary Police Detective Sgt. Mario Gonzalez at (219) 881-1209.
