Officer, three detainees injured in fight at Cook County Jail

A Cook County Sheriff’s officer and three detainees were taken to hospitals after a fight Friday afternoon at the Cook County Jail.

Two inmates got into a fight in Division 9, the maximum security division of the jail at 26th and California about 4 p.m., according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Cara Smith. Other detainees joined in the fight, and one used a pen as a weapon.

Three detainees were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening puncture wounds from the pen, Smith said.

One officer was exposed to the pepper spray that was used to subdue the fight and was also taken to a hospital, Smith said.

Two of the detainees were taken to Mount Sinai, and one was taken to Stroger Hospital, all in serious-to-critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs.

The correctional officer, a 40-year-old man, was taken to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in fair-to-serious condition, according to Fire Media.

Smith said the cause of the fight is not yet known.
