Union officials say U.S. Steel Corp. laid off 38 workers Friday at its Gary Works plant.

Maintenance staffers were escorted out of the Gary steel mill, according to Mike Millsap, United Steelworkers District 7 director.

U.S. Steel spokeswoman Sarah Cassella wouldn’t comment.

U.S. Steel laid off about a quarter of its salaried workers in April — about 750 managers, supervisors and other workers.

Last year, it laid off more than 1,000 workers in northwestern Indiana.

Millsap says the union will fight U.S. Steel on the layoffs, first going to company managers and then appealing to an independent arbiter.
