3 dead, 10 wounded in Tuesday shootings across Chicago

Three men were killed and at least 10 other people, including a 13-year-old girl, were wounded in shootings Tuesday across Chicago.

About 10 p.m., Kenneth Carrington and the girl were standing on the sidewalk in the 7300 block of South University when shots rang out and they were both struck, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Carrington was shot in the neck and taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:22 p.m., authorities said. He lived on the same block as the shooting.

The girl suffered a graze wound to the left leg and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was listed in good condition, police said, adding that she appears to have been struck by a stray bullet.

Mikel Maragh, 26, was in a vehicle at 5:12 p.m. in the 1400 block of West Carroll when someone walked up and shot at him, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Maragh, who lived in the 2000 block of West Jackson, was shot in the head and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m.

Earlier Tuesday, a man was shot to death in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side. The man, thought to be in his 20s, was found at 3:57 a.m. lying on the ground unresponsive in the 3800 block of West Roosevelt, police said. He had been shot in the back and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died. The medical examiner’s office has not yet released information about the fatality.

Most recently, a 37-year-old man was critically wounded in another Lawndale neighborhood shooting on the West Side. He was shot in the head at 10:35 p.m. in the 2200 block of South Kirkland, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

In a separate Lawndale attack, a 23-year-old man was standing outside about 10:35 p.m. in the 4000 block of West Cermak when he heard gunfire and realized he’d been shot in the right hand, police said. He was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

About 9:25 p.m., a 38-year-old man was shot during a robbery on the North Side. He was sitting in his vehicle in the 2400 block of West Bryn Mawr when another male walked up and announced a robbery, police said. The robber, described as a white male dressed in a button down shirt and jeans, made off with the victim’s wallet before he opened fire, striking the man in the left leg. The man was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was listed in good condition.

Less than an hour earlier, a 24-year-old man was critically wounded in a Hermosa neighborhood shooting on the Northwest Side. He was in an alley at 8:36 p.m. in the 4000 block of West Armitage when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside shot him in the chest, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

Just before 7 p.m., a 19-year-old woman was shot in the leg in the 1300 block of East 74th Street in the South Shore neighborhood, police said. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where her condition stabilized. The woman may not have been the intended target, according to police sources.

Earlier Tuesday, a 30-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side. He was outside about 4 a.m. in the 1400 block of North Harding when five people walked up and at least one of them opened fire, police said. He was shot in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

At 1:48 a.m., a 20-year-old man was standing in the street in the 2400 block of South Sacramento in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side, when three males walked up and fired shots in his direction, police said. The man was shot in the leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

About an hour earlier, an 18-year-old man was wounded in another Lawndale shooting. He was standing in the street at 12:45 a.m. in the 2100 block of South Harding when three males approached him and started shooting, police said. He was shot in the groin and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

Tuesday’s first shooting happened about 12:10 a.m. in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side. A 21-year-old woman was standing outside with a group of people in the 5100 block of South Hermitage when shots rang out, police said. She was shot in the right foot and taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition.
