A west suburban man was denied bond Monday after being charged with beating his girlfriend’s 1-year-old son to death in a rage while changing the baby’s diaper at their Cicero home.

Edwin O’Reilly died at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn at 6:38 p.m. Thursday, and an autopsy ruled his death a homicide from child abuse, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The boy had been in the care of his mother’s boyfriend, 23-year-old Martin Alvarado Jr., who lived with them in the 1600 block of 49th Court, according to Cicero town spokesman Ray Hanania.

Alvarado Jr. struck O’Reilly repeatedly after the baby urinated on him as he was changing his diaper, Hanania said.

He gave a video-taped confession to police as he was interrogated through the weekend, officials said.

A sibling of O’Reilly was taken into protective custody by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, which has had prior contact with the family, an agency spokeswoman said.

Alvarado Jr., who faces one count of first-degree murder, was denied bail at a hearing in Maywood on Monday, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office. He is next scheduled to appear in court on April 28.
