At least one person was shot in a fight outside Hawthorne Race Course Sunday evening.

Emergency crews responded at 8:31 p.m. to the shooting outside the horse racing track at 3501 S. Laramie Ave. in Stickney, according to police in the western suburb.

Officers in neighboring Cicero were called in to assist with a melee “that involved gunfire,” Cicero town spokesman Ray Hanania said in an email.

Hawthorne publicity director Jim Miller said the disturbance happened in the parking lot, where a yearly cultural festival was being held.

A Hawthorne ambulance took one person to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Miller said. The female’s injuries weren’t specified, but they weren’t thought to be life-threatening, according to Miller and Hanania.

The festival, scheduled to run until 10:30 p.m., was evacuated and shut down. Racing events going on at the time were stopped, but had resumed by about 9:30 p.m., Miller said.

Stickney Fire Department officials declined to comment. Additional details were not immediately available.
