Adventure Stage Chicago theater for young audiences will be packing its bags next month and heading to Scotland after being selected by the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) to represent the U.S. in that company’s Home Away Festival, Oct. 8-12.
A story Friday in American Theatre Magazine revealed that NTS commissioned five international theater companies to create new works for the prestigious fest. “Adventure Stage is housed in the Northwestern Settlement, a social service organization that has served immigrants and under-privileged community members since 1891,” the story explained.
“Reprise,” the show (with original music) to be presented at the Scottish fest (and the play that opens the company’s 2016-17 season in Chicago, Sept. 16-17), explores “the life of a man with a violin imagined in three different eras,” representing three different cultures, from the 1930s through the 2010s.
Adventure Stage’s shows are presented at Northwestern Settlement’s Vittum Theater, 1012 N. Noble in Chicago. Their mission is to “create and tell heroic stories about young people.” Earlier this year, Adventure Stage was awarded a Mellon Foundation Grant through which renowned Chicago playwright Carlos Murillo will be embedded with the company for the next three years to “allow ASC to explore new stories, themes and partnerships through a dedicated playwright.” Murillo is also an Associate Professor at the Theatre School of DePaul University.
